The fishing and fishery products sector is a strategic sector on which the State relies to strengthen food security, sustainable development and support the national economy.
The indicators achieved during the recent period reflect the extent of the development achieved in light of the new strategy pursued by the State to increase production capacities and stimulate investments in :
marine and freshwater aquaculture
- deep sea fishing.
- shipbuilding and repair
- In addition to improving the economic and social conditions of professionals.
- Exploit scientific research as a means of achieving objectives and responding to the demands of professionals.
- Develop processing industries.
Fishing sector indicators with numbers
The fishing and fishery production sector has more than 65,100 maritime registrants active in the field of fishing and aquaculture, distributed in 46 ports along the coastal strip.
Aquaculture Section
The Aquaculture section is experiencing great dynamism and has begun to contribute to the development of the national economy and the improvement of food security, since the sector counts the entry into production through 17 aquaculture farms with floating cages in sea distributed in 9 coastal wilayas, which contribute to supporting the national market with 8,000 tonnes.

Sea oyster farming is also experiencing remarkable development after having counted 25 projects in 12 coastal wilayas with a production capacity of 59 tonnes.
Aquaculture in agricultural irrigation basins is also experiencing an upward curve after the success of the experience of breeding and marketing red tilapia in several wilayas of the country, where investments have moved from the public sector through the complex ” COSIDER AGRICO” to the private sector.
Through a certain number of projects proposed in each of the following wilayas: Ain Temouchent, Bordj Bou Arreridj, Chlef and Biskra, and the Ministry of Fisheries and Fisheries Production. Horizon of 2024, aims to implement all new projects to reach 5,000 tons.
